Felt-tips Forever- Texta Queen at The Arm!
05 Oct. '06
A show at The Arm for our Aussie pal Texta!
“Texta” is Australian for felt-tip marker and Arlene TextaQueen likes her tips felt. She spends her life as a marker superhero, exposing real women and other performers, un-dressed-up in accessories and surrounds of their own desire. Depicted in life-size line and livid color she re-con-texta-ualizes the tradition of the salon nude as she intimately uncovers the unique character of her subjects.
TQ’s pin-up portraits have been a playing card series, shown in Australia’s Museum of Contemporary Art, as animation on SBS TV and at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, and been commissioned for surfboards, murals and tapestries. TextaQueen has recently flaunted felt-tip renditions of fabulous friends in exhibitions in Los Angeles, California and Portland, Oregon, and during a 6 month artist-in-residency at the International Studio and Curatorial Program in Manhattan.
‘Felt-tips Forever’ is TextaQueen’s first solo show in New York and includes portraits of Michelle Tea, Taylor Mac, Singing Sadie and more…
