Sharon Cheslow & Coterie Exchange's Sonic Triptych III featuring Matterlink
Sharon Cheslow
10 Aug. '07 - 10 Aug. '07
Opens: August 10th, 7:30PM
Sharon Cheslow and Coterie Exchange’s “Sonic Triptych III” is a sound event for multiple, random sets of 3 performers situated in a triptych – left, center, right – and interwoven like a round. Performers are instructed to represent themselves through sound-producing actions of their choice as a means of facilitating participatory and collaborative action. Previous versions of Sonic Triptych were presented at Telic Arts Exchange (2007), Illuminated Corridor (2006) and Ladyfest Bay Area (2002). This 30 minute version will be its New York premiere and will feature Paris filmmaker/video artist Matterlink (aka James Schneider).
Both Cheslow and Schneider have their roots in 1980s DC punk. Cheslow was in Chalk Circle, Bloody Mannequin Orchestra and Suture and co-authored Banned in DC with Cynthia Connolly. Schneider directed Blue is Beautiful, made with The Make-Up. For this event, Matterlink will vample intermittently with the Sonic Triptych participants as both collaboration and participation.
Matterlink, vampler, performs a “live cinema”, playing shots both found and filmed by the artist. He re-samples them with the original sound attached. Triggering these “sonic images” or “affect pockets” from a midi system, he transforms improvised refrains into raw, content-driven sound/image-scapes. In 1998, Schneider moved to Paris where he has been vampling solo and collaboratively since 2001. He recently completed the science fiction feature 1,2,3, Whiteout, a tone poem starring cult actor Lou Castel which premiered at this year’s Rotterdam Film Festival.
